The poet date coincides with the ending of the American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – April 9, 1865). people have pondered over time if the meaning he is me referring the North and South as one with the war being death. The war had an impact on everyone, how could it not. I believe more that he is him, he died, his life came to an end, and if he is me, then i also have died with my life having no impact, What a wasted life lived. Maybe its a call to change, its never to late, quote from much larger poem.
